Campus Tours & Grocery Stores

January 4th, 2011
Aghia Paraskevi

So yesterday was a pretty normal day, woke up early and got ready for our noon campus tour. The campus is quaint and elevated, making it a prime spot to view the entire city. Oraios! It's marbled staircases and various amphitheaters made me wish UW was a little more like it; smaller, more personal, and less institutionalized. The group looked insanely like tourists (I've stopped caring as much as I used to) with their cameras glued to their hands and taking pictures of every random little thing, which made me laugh. I found myself continuously looking at the ground everywhere we went, just watching my step. I realized I've been doing this a lot of the trip: watching myself to make sure I don't fall, consequently missing the journey along the way. The rest of the day I didn't care about stubbing my toe or curbs ending sooner than I thought, and I hope I can keep this up the rest of the trip.
After visiting basically every single part of the campus, trying all of these locked doors because campus isn't open until the 12th, we scurried for a snack before our group meeting. Linh and I ran from our little sandwich shop all the way home thinking we were late, but we ended up being the only ones there. That's how we roll.
The meeting consisted of going over the rules, talking about assignments and our expectations as Americans and UW students, the works. We had some free time until our International Student Orientation, so Brendon and I went to this graffiti park next to the apartments and chatted for awhile. Thankfully when we got back our orientation had food! Yes! Our entire program was overjoyed- mental note: the way to Americans hearts is through food. Afterwards, Arnold, Brendon, and I checked online for cheap flights to Germany for Arnold's 23rd birthday with no luck, but will continue searching for an awesome weekend birthday excursion. Then a Pretty Little Liars marathon with Brendon (I'm trying to get him caught up so we can watch the new episodes together), and then we rushed to get groceries before they closed.
The first grocery store we went to was closed, so we asked some Greek gamer boys where another one was and they eventually told us. We spent the entire walk there making jokes about how they probably always mess with tourists, but you know, good stuff. The next grocery store we made it to was fun: so many foods I've never heard of, so you're basically guessing what kind of food you're getting: bleu cheese or regular, dark chocolate or milk, plain or strawberry yogurt, your guess is as good as mine.
Back to the homeland we went! Brendon and Linh ended up staying in our room looking at pictures and talking until around 1:30am, but apparently I just conked out haha. I've been known to do that.

Nutellarific,

Susie
